Join the 4th Gyudon Eating Contest

Hey guys! Have you ever had a nice bowl of steaming-hot gyudon? how about two? or three? 

If you are able to eat that much then I suggest you join Yoshinoya's Gyudon Eating Contest. Now on its fourth year, it promises better and bigger prizes to be given away! 

Last Wednesday, March 5 we were challenged to take on the gyudon eating contest. As a foodie, yes I can't resist the temptation of having a steaming bowl of rice topped with beef strips infused in herbs and spices. 

These is only a sample of all the yummy goodies you can try at Yoshinoya.

The contest was hosted by Mr. Orlando "Nodz" M. Galgana, Assistant Restaurant Manager of Yoshinoya. We were given a brief run down of the mechanics and also the prizes to be given away. 

We were also greeted by Mr. Timothy Yang, President of Yoshinoya Century Pacific Inc. And also he gave some encouraging words and a reminder about the prizes. 

The Prizes for this years gyu don eating contest is:

First Place: 100,000 php CASH and Trip for 2 to Japan courtesy of Cebu Pacific. 

Second Place: 50,000 php CASH

Third Place: 25,000 php CASH. 

I remember last year there was no trip to Japan so this year's winner will have a hoot if ever they win they get to go to Japan and experience visiting popular places there! Me so jealous! haha! 

Okay I'll give you the run down of the whole mechanics in a while but first I will share to you my experience with the gyudon eating challenge shall we?

We were first given two bowls of gyudon at the start of the challenge, but as we finish these off we will be given another one. Also there were Yoshinoya staff assigned to each contestant to ensure fair play. 

There was also a timer given of 15 minutes to eat as much gyudon as we can. When the timer had started I seriously did not expect to be able to finish more than one in fifteen minutes. As eating my bowl of Gyudon I felt a bit conscious because I was the only one holding the bowl up and eating what is in the bowl. 

I did competitive eating before so being a neat eater was not really an option for this. I did notice another competitor doing the same thing.

I was shocked to see he finished about four bowls but also happy at the same time. And so the fifteen minutes was up. 

Here's how much I ate. 

Those were the three emojins up in my head at that moment. I actually did pretty well because I believe I was the only girl who was able to finish this much.

The Results are in! Here are the winners for the Bloggers leg of the Gyudon Eating Contest!

I won Third place! Yey! I was actually shocked when I won third place since I was expecting another guy in our group would be it. That just proves it you guys di ako masiba...matakaw lang LOL

Second place goes to kuya Wilmar! He was able to finish 3 bowls and about 1/4 of his fourth bowl. Congratulations!

Now for the mechanics. There are two mechanics to be done, one for the qualifying match and the other for the grand finals match. 

Qualifying Match Mechanics: 

1. The Yoshinoya Gyudon Eating Contest is open to all males and females, 18 years old and above. 

2. Qualifying rounds will be held in all Yoshinoya stores daily from Monday to Friday, From April 21 to May 30, 2014. 

Schedule is as follows: 

- April 21,22,23,24,25

- April 28,29,30 May 1,2

- May 5,6,7,8,9

- May 12, 13,14,15,16

- May 19,20,21,22,23

- May 26,27,28, 29, 30

3. Purchase of the Yoshinoya Gyudon meal entitles the customer to join the contest, take-out, deliveries, bulk orders are not included. 

4. Before a customer starts, He/She must fill out a Registration form and sign a health and release waiver. For the qualifying round, the beef bowls should be consumed in the store. The customer who finishes the most number of bowls in five minutes wins the challenge of the day. 

5. Customer must show one (1) valid ID to the store manager of Yoshinoya. Only the following types of ID will be accepted: School ID, Company ID, Driver's License, SSS ID, GSIS ID, NBI Clearance, Postal ID, Voters ID, Passport. 

6. A customer can join as many times as he or she wants and should complete all requirements on the application form for every trial. 

The designated Yoshinoya crew records the number of bowls consumed by the top 1 & 2 contestants who eats the most number of bowls and weighs the amount of leftover food. 

The following will be observed:

• Only Yoshinoya napkins and standard Yoshinoya condiments (red ginger & Kikkoman) will be allowed to be put on the table and used by the customer. 
• Only water provided by Yoshinoya is allowed during the contest proper
• Only the prescribed timer in Yoshinoya stores will be used in timing the customer
• Customer should not be holding nor touching the spoon, fork, or chopsticks before the timer starts.

8. The Yoshinoya store crew shows the timer to the customer before starting the time record and starts the timer right after giving a go-signal. Customers then starts eating the beef bowls. 

9. Customers should turn over empty bowls before starting the next bowl. All left over grains in bowls will be weighed along with the unfinished bowl. 

10. The Yoshinoya store crew writes the number of bowls consumed and weighs the leftover food of the top 1 & 2 contestants to validate the entry and verifies count and weigh with the contestant. 

11. The Yoshinoya store crew writes the number of bowls and weight of left over on the registration form to be signed by the yoshinoya store crew and the customer/contestant over their printed names. Only registration forms bearing the printed names and signatures of the Yoshinoya store crew and the customer/contestant shall be considered valid. 

12. The Yoshinoya store crew writes the name and number of bowls consumed on the Leader board only. The four weekly fastest gyudon bowl eaters who qualified in the store will be placed on its leader board per store. This will be updated every time a new record is set. 

13. After the weekly qualifying rounds in the stores, all weekly contestants who qualified per store will automatically be entered in the Grand Finals. All qualified contestants will be notified between June 2-6, 2014 through mobile call and e-mail. 

14. In case of a tie in the stores, the store manager shall call upon the contestants who tied for a re-match. Contestant with the least number of rice grains left will be selected as winner for the round. 

15. In any case of disputes, the decision of the Yoshinoya store manager will be considered valid and final. 

16. A DTI representative shall be present during the eliminations. 

17.  Employees of Yoshinoya Century Pacific, its agencies and participating outlets, including their relatives up to the second degree of affinity or consanguinity and employees of sponsors, are disqualified from the qualifying match. 

Grand Match Mechanics: 

1. The Final Match will be held on June 14, 2014, 1 PM in the Activity Center of Glorietta, Makati City. 

2. The Forty-two finalists will be competing by eating the most number of bowls in 15 minutes. 

• Finalists should release a health release and liability waiver prior to the final match. 
• Each finalist is given ten regular beef bowls and is assigned with a marshall.
• Finalists should not be holding or touching the spoon, fork or chopsticks before the timer starts. 
• NO VOMITING is allowed for the duration of the contest and 15 minutes after the contest proper. In case of vomiting, contestant is automatically disqualified. 

3. The timer will start upon the go-signal of the host. 

4 After 15 minutes is up the finalist should raise both their hands and step back from the table. Marshals will weigh the remaining contents in bowls. 

5. The top 4 winning Finalists with the most number of bowls and least weight of bowl contents will win the following prizes:

1st. Place: PHP 150,000 CASH and Trip to Japan tickets c/o Cebu Pacific

2nd Place: PHP 50,000

3rd Place: PHP 25,000

6. The non-winning finalists will be given consolation prizes of PHP 2,000 worth of Yoshinoya GCs each. 

7. In case of a tie for the first place, 2nd place, or 3rd place, a 1 bowl overtime match will be done among tied finalists for their corresponding prizes. The Finalist who finishes their beef bowl with the fastest time and little to no grains left will be awarded the prize. 

8. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be announced and awarded during the Yoshinoya Gyudon Eating contest Final Match event and announced through posters and print ads. 

9. I case the grand winner be denied of a Japan Visa, Trip to Japan ticket will be forfeited in favor of Yoshinoya. 

10. non-cash prizes and consolation prizes are not convertible to cash. 

Control Measure: 

1. All application forms per branch shall be under the custody of the store manager, properly number sequentially per branch. 

2. After the last qualifying event, all application forms will be collected and brought to the Yoshinoya Head office for encoding and safe keeping under the custody of the Operations Manager - Ms. Lal Habana. 

3. A DTI Representative shall be invited to witness the Grand Finals Match.

Yoshinoya Brings Japan's Famous Beef Bowl to Ayala Fairview Terraces!

Last Friday I attended an event for the opening of Yoshinoya in Ayala Fairview Terraces. If you guys would like to know more about Ayala Fairview Terraces you can check my other blog for that since today I will share to you the awesome food from Yoshinoya.

I remember when I was younger (ouch!) My cousin likes to eat at Yoshinoya and would always bring home one for me as well since I am her look out when she sneaks out just for fun.

We were young and sheltered kids so little adventures like going to Robinson's Galleria is like Dora on an adventure. Okay that sounds lame..but I really like eating Japanese food since I grew up learning a whole lot of the Japanese culture.

Okay time for history class! 

Yoshinoya's Famous beef bowl was actually invented way back in the 1800's by Eikichi Matsuda. The name of their store is Yoshinoya which means - 

Yoshino - A district in Osaka, Japan; Eikichi Matsuda's hometown

Ya - Japanese for 'house'

It has garnered a lot of attention to the Japanese people because it was their version of 'fastfood' back then within the busy fishermen and also travelers during the Edo Period.  

It went on a full expansion when Mizuho Matsuda converted their restaurant into a 24-hour restaurant which boosted its image not just in Japan but also for the rest of the world. Having about 1,200 outlets around the world namely in Japan, USA, Hongkong, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. 

And now one of its newest branch is in Ayala Fairview Terraces~!

Last Friday, We were offered to see their newest branch and also some of Yoshinoya's famous and newest treats. The program was started by the store blessing by Rev. Fr. Regalia which was actually not the typical store blessing if you asked me.

It was followed by the ribbon cutting and throwing of coins as a sign of good luck and bountiful blessings for the newest branch.

were also speeches by Managing Director Mr. Leo Co and Mr. Timothy Yang, the President of Yoshinoya Century Pacific Inc.

Afterwards we were served a full course Yoshinoya meal which consists of their famous Gyudon, Kani Salad, Hani Shu mai and green iced tea.

Beef Bowl or Gyudon in Japanese. It consists of thin beef strips, slices of onion, Chewy rice and a broth. The taste is quite good although I wish they would have a version with more veggies than onions only. You can try this for only 119PHP per bowl.

Kani Salad. This consists of thin strips of carrots and cucumber with romaine lettuce topped with strips of Kani or seaweeds, caviar and Kani salad dressing. I like this salad since it doesn't have that much pizzazz but still have that great taste into it. Try this out for about 69PHP per serving.

Kani Shu Mai - This is bascially its a special kind since it has pork meat and at the center is a crab meat. It is not the typical shu mai if you ask me because it is packed with flavor with the unexpected taste of the crab meat in the middle. You can try this out for 59PHP for three pieces.

Yoshinoya is definitely home to delicious modern Japanese comfort food. Since 2001, The company is the most preferred Japanese restaurant in the country that has offered high quality food at affordable prizes.

I felt really stuffed after eating this feast. I really love the Gyudon at Yoshinoya. The taste of the Gyudon is just superb and the serving is just right!

The Appraisery: My kind of coffee shop.

I like love coffee. Next to tea, soda or other beverages I really love drinking coffee. There is just that something nice to drinking some coffee. I could drink it hot or cold but it would really depend on the coffee shop that I go to if they serve great coffee.

I stumbled upon this coffee shop a couple of weeks back on my way home..which technically I was not feeling going home yet because I felt bored..so I stopped by Cubao expo and found this coffee shop.

According to one of their employees they have been in cubao expo for about half a year but they had their store at greenhills before. I was actually interested in the store because of its interiors. They have these black boards that has writings regarding supporting local brands, pictures from local artists and also about games.

I am not a gamer but the games that they feature here were the ones that only see on big bang theory..sort of.

Then off I go and bought myself a cold Americano and just chilled outside. I was really hoping to end my not so eventful day with a cold americano and just let time fly by. Then one of their patrons approached me which actually threw me back because I was not really hoping to talk to anyone. He invited me for a game of 7 Wonders.

I was not a gamer but I guess playing with random strangers wouldn't be a bad thing right? 

I was actually able to play with the owner of the Appraisery and he is really nice and he taught me how to play the game. If you ask me how I would rather crawl underground and cry because the game is simple in context but still complicated. Still a great game nonetheless. 

According to one of the patrons, the store has weekly featured games in which you could come n and play with other gamers just for the heck of it - of course you need to purchase something from the store. 

The food that they offer are pretty cheap which ranges from 70php to 150php. They also have great deserts which are still within the budget of college students. 

Over all, I think hanging out here would be a great thing to do. The Appraisery has a very chilled vibe to it that most college students and yuppies alike that will like.

King Bee Chinese Food Opens at Fisher Mall

 

 King Bee Chinese Food Restaurant marks another momentous event as they open their newest branch at Fisher Mall in Quezon Ave corner Roosevelt Avenue last Sunday, February 16, 2014.

The event was opened by the ribbon cutting that was graced by Mr. Bobby Del Rosario, Owner of Fisher Mall together with King Bee owners, its staff, visitors, friends and guests alike.

 The opening ceremony was followed by a King's Feast. In this part, the guests are given authentic Chinese cuisine that is fit for a king. I was quite stuffed actually with the food that was given to me.

Complete Break Through of Expenses to Potipot Trip

Hey guys! I am back! 

Okay on this post I will be giving you the break down that we had in our group for the trip. 

We actually got a package trip to Potipot Island courtesy of Hurray zone Travels and tours so here we go!

  Transportation  = 1700 php

Food and drinks = 300 php

                 Miscellaneous   =  200 php

Total     = 2200 php

YES! only 2200 php! for some it might be a bit expensive but think of it this way. If you are a first timer and you are traveling with about 10 people. Its actually best to get a tour package or carpool because transportation alone is quite expensive. 

The comfort in traveling is noted on this since you will decide on your stopover unlike being on a bus that has maybe one stopover on a terminal for only about 30 minutes. While if you go with a tour group, you can have two or three stops if needed. 

There are actually myriads of things I could tell you about the good and the bad things when traveling with a group or on your own. But that will be on another post ok?

My First Trip for 2014 in Potipot Island!

 Hey guys! I am back! I know I haven't been posting lately due to my impending resignation to my current place of employment. It seems hard to swallow that after three years of working - might I say happily working with Koreans I have mustered the courage to resign as an online English teacher. 

Its not that I don't want to anymore but I just want to explore my boundaries as an individual and I would like to also experience life without getting stuck to a desk job. 

But nuff said about that I am here to show you my recent trip to... POTIPOT ISLAND! *confetti splash*

2014 Plans and Ideas

Even though this blog is named Photoescape Travels I haven't really posted any traveling posts. I know really lame but this 2014 I promised myself that I will travel more rather than what I did last year. 

I have already made plans on my first travel for the year 2-0-1-4 and I am really excited for it!

Traveling is like a luxury for some but I plan to make mine more of a hobby. I will be planning really cheap and great travels that you and your friends could enjoy also I will try to post more hotel and accommodation reviews for sure since I remembered one of my most prominent post is when I reviewed the hotel I stayed at Bolinao a year ago. 

I tell you that my reviews will be brutally honest as much as I wouldn't like it but its for the betterment for it any way right? 

Here are some of the places I am hoping to visit real soon. 

Intramuros. 

I know its quite lame but I will do a complete low down on the walled city since 1. Its about an hour away from my place and 2. Its a tourist destination that even the Manilenos need to discover.

I know this is not in Baguio but the trees remind me of it! :D

Baguio.

Baguio is one of those places that I miss out on my list since I never really have anyone to go there with. But I told myself with or without a companion I will go there this 2014. I remembered having pictures of my brothers going there and whenever I would ask my mom why I am not included she would tell me nasa tyan palang kita nyan paano ka mapupunta dyan?

Oh the agony of having a mom like her. But as saying expect a post of the beautiful city of Pines real soon!

Zambales.

 One of the cheapest ways to travel and explore nature according to my buddies is to go here. I will be traveling here by the end of the month so expect a post soon!

Here are just of the places I will be mentioning here since I have ran out of options. If you do have any suggestions do leave them on the comments section below. I will be glad to list them down and let you know if this will be on my bucket list.

Beverage Find: OKF's Milky Be Happy

Hey hey! I'm back with a new post!

I haven't posted in a while..my bad! but promise I will do more soon! For now let's get on this baby ok?

I haven't been feeling well lately. I don't know why but I decided to try to move on and with that the best way is to look for new stuff! hehe! I am a foodie but I don't let that get to me because that will just make my wallet and tummy get a massive rage on for me, but once in a while they let me be...

Today's post will be all about OKF's Milky Be Happy!

I'm not particularly sure about where the drink came from since there is an English and Russian (I think) writing on it. But according to the manufacturer at the back it says its from Korea.. quite confusing to me HELP!

This is quite similar to Milkis which is the real deal that it came from Korea. Retail price for this is only about 5 pesos cheaper than Milkis. I bought mine for about 19 pesos at Ministop a piece.

Compared to Milkis, Milky be happy comes in three flavors: Peach, Strawberry and Orange. I only tried out Peach and Strawberry since the store I bought these doesn't have the orange kind.

Peach has has milky pinkish color. Kind of looks like dish washing soap according to my brother. Taste wise- it was okay, it was quite sweet but I wasn't able to taste the peach flavor. It was in the aroma though. It really smelled like peaches but the taste didn't get me.

Now onto the Strawberry flavor. If you noticed in the picture it has more of a saturated milky red color into it - kind of looks like strawberry milk. The aroma though was off for me because it smelled like medicine for me - the ones that has the strawberry flavor? you get the clue. Taste wise, I was able to taste the strawberry but it was not the one that I expected.

Overall I was quite disappointed with these. I know they are cheaper and has a variety of flavors than Milkis, but I think I will just stick with Milkis for now.

BAGA Manila's 2nd Anniversary party!

Hello! Sorry for the late post. I haven't been feeling well lately so I wasn't able to update this as soon as I can. I hope you guys understand. 

Last October 26, I attended BAGA Manila's 2nd Anniversary which was held at A Venue's Parking Lot.

The event was full of surprises and also of food! different partners have participated in this event to celebrate the 2nd year of BAGA Manila.

Part from different activities and also performances from performers, the highlight of the program is the International Boodle Fight which is not your ordinary food challenge.

The participants are tasked to make their food - from scratch! From building the fire to cooking and eventually eating the dishes they will cook.

I was really amazed with the idea since its not an ordinary that you out eat your competitors - you have to be a great griller as well!

While waiting for the results, There was some performances by local act. And by the end of the boodle fight the winner was announced - The Japanese team won! I was really amazed because they were able to do everything well and on time as well.

Another highlight of the event was the performance of Lolita Carbon of ASIN, Itchyworms and Shamrock. Being a music lover I was like a teenager all over again seeing Lolita Carbon since when I was kid my mom always plays her song every morning and also seeing Itchyworms was a great opportunity. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take a picture with them since my camera gave up on me on the last minute, but seeing them was really an experience I would not forget for sure.

Baga Manila is a great place to chill with your friends after work on a Friday night or even a great destination with your family on the weekends!

Are you ready for BAGA MANILA's 2nd Anniversary?

Hello! 

I know this post is late but I have a valid reason for it. I was too stressed last week because of work that I keep putting off this post. I'm sorry but I won't let that happen. 

Okay let's get on with this post shall we? 

Last October 12, I went to A. Venue in Makati to attend BAGA Manila's Bingo night. If you don't know what BAGA means it actually stands for Barbecuers and Grillers Association Manila. This group basically features barbecuers and grillers' establishments here in Manila to showcase one of Filipino's favorite - barbecue and grilled meat! 

I am a meat lover so I was in for a treat! Another reason why they are having this event is also to give out several units of grill and food handling training to several people in the event as well. 

And of course who wouldn't forget the food! We had a lot of food that was given for us to try. There were barbecue, isaw (chicken gizzards), Grilled chicken and so much more. 

The food selection are not all grilled food, there were some Italian dishes and also Korean food! There is also a small tiangge area where you could shop from a variety of items like books, clothes, accessories, to even get a henna tattoo! 

As part of BAGA Manila's 2nd Anniversary, they will be having tons of events lined up this coming 26th of October still at A Venue in Makati! From Zumba in the afternoon to a live performance to some local acts in the evening. 

And did I mention the entrance is FREE?
